Phillies’ Trea Turner gets murky yet optimistic injury return update

The Philadelphia Phillies are dealing with the absence of shortstop Trea Turner due to a hamstring injury a little bit under two weeks ago, but he reportedly went through agility drills and took ground balls on Wednesday, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

“There is no timeline,” Rob Thompson said, via Gelb.

While there is no timeline given by Phillies manager Rob Thompson, Gelb indicates that Trea Turner does not look like a player who will miss another four weeks. When he initially hurt his hamstring back on May 5 against the San Francisco Giants, it was reported that he would miss at least six weeks. With it being just under two weeks since the injury and given the six-week timeline, it is interesting that he went through agility drills so soon.

Generally with hamstrings, they can be tricky when it comes to recovery. It can be easy to tweak or aggravate the injury again, even if it might feel fine, so the Phillies would not have been ok with Turner doing drills if they were not confident that he would be able to make it through without making the injury worse.

For that reason, it will be worth monitoring Turner’s activity in the next week or so to see if he will be able to ramp up even more. If he is able to do so, it would not be a surprise to see him make a potential return earlier than the initial six-week timeline.

The Phillies are off to a great start this season, despite the absence of Turner in the last couple of weeks. Philadelphia holds the most wins in baseball with a 30-13 record, which has the team in first place in the National League East. That is no small feat, as the Atlanta Braves are a powerhouse and currently sit two games back in second place with a 26-13 record.

As far as Turner’s season goes on an individual level, he was off to a great start as well. In 31 games before going on the IL with the hamstring injury, Turner hit for a .343 batting average with a .392 on-base percentage, which is good for a 145 wRC+, and he has accumulated 1.5 WAR, according to FanGraphs.

Turner got off to a cold start in his Phillies tenure in 2023, struggling throughout the first half of the season. However, since Phillies fans cheered and encouraged him to come out of that slump, he has been the Turner that baseball fans have known over the years. He was a crucial part of the Phillies’ lineup in the early going, and he will be once he is back.

It seems that Turner might be able to return earlier than expected.
